For more than 40 years I lived in the small town of Ellis, KS. I drove by this view almost every day. One evening, the light, boat and dock were all just right and I captured the moment.

When I think of Slovenia. I think of the color green. This gem of a country is one of the prettiest I have visited. In the Julian Alps high above Lake Bled, farmers gather their hay and store them in these traditional covered sheds so that it can dry.

The beautiful small city of Rovinj is located on the coast of the Adriatic. Approaching from the sea, one is greeted by these very old buildings. Just to the left of the waterfront is a busy open air market.

People have been living in these old cities for hundreds of years and some parts of daily life remained unchanged. It is common to see laundry strung out to dry between these very old buildings. Walking the cobblestone streets is magical, especially in the evening.

The old town of Rovinj on the coast of the Adriatic is made up of narrow lanes. Usually it is filled with tourists, but the side streets are empty and fun to explore.

“Drawbridge Dubrovnik”

Dubrovnik is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on the Croatian coastline. This city is home to Saint Blaise and received much damage as a result of the war in the 1990’s. The drawbridge serves as the main entrance to the old walled city. It is among the 10 best preserved medieval cities in the world.

This staircase is located just inside the Drawbridge as you enter the old town of Dubrovnik. After climbing the stairs, you are in the old walled city referred to as “The Pearl of the Adriatic”.

I’m always intrigued by views such as this set of stairs in the city of Dubrovnik. I want to climb them and see where they go. I also think of the people who built them and the stories that could be told.

The town of Kotor in Montenegro is on a fjord on the Adriatic. As in many of these towns, interesting views are found on the narrow side streets that make up the town. Walking back to the harbour, I noticed this cat just behind the water pump.

The Piazza in front of St Peters Basilica in Rome is lined by a colonnade made up of 300 double pairs of massive columns. The piazza as well as the colonnade were designed by Bernnini in 1656. This image was made early in the day before the crowds filled the area.

Entrance to the small hotel run by nuns offers rooms to tourists visiting Assisi. It is within walking distance of the Basilica DI San Francesco d’Assisi. Just next door is a beautiful small church that is open to visitors after 8:30 each day.

The small hill town of Assisi is home to St. Francis founder of the Franciscan religious order. After visiting the Basilica, I strolled the side streets and was greeted by this view. It’s best to see Assisi late in the day after the tour busses have departed and the crowds are gone.

Florence Italy is one of my favorite cities in Europe and I have visited it many times over the years. It is easy to find nice light and interesting views. This image was made looking back into the main part of the city after crossing the Ponte Vecchio bridge.

Heavy overcast skies on a late October morning add interest and bring out the texture of this stone balcony in Venice, Italy. During the summer the city is filled with huge crowds of tourists, but late in fall Venice is less crowded and the weather is great.

Cappadocia in central Turkey is dotted with these strange rock formations called ‘fairy chimneys’. Lava flows from volcanic eruptions were sculpted by wind and rain to create these formations. Cappadocians chiseled homes in the soft rock and Byzantine Christians during the medieval era took refuge here.

I love driving trips and usually try to stay off the interstate highways and travel on two lane roads as often as I can. This image was made alongside one of those roads on a trip through the Southwest.
