The making of Kachina Dolls (or Katsina Dolls) is an ancient art originating in the Hopi and Zuni tribes of New Mexico. The intention was to make these pieces for their children, which represented many facets of their spiritual and physical worlds.

Tiwa is one of three Kiowa-Tanoan languages spoken by a few of the Pueblo people of New Mexico. Though these Tanoan languages are closely related, speakers of one cannot fully understand speakers of another (similar to German and English speakers). There are about 4000 speakers of these three languages in the American Southwest today.
This painting was inspired by vast high desert environment around the Rio Grande basin where the Taos people have hunted for millennia.
