Hand Building Pottery Class with Tanya Ferguson

Register-nowThis new clay class will focus will be on learning the following basic techniques: Pinch Pot – a method of pinching clay between your fingers to form a bowl shape. By combining pinch pots, you’ll learn to create closed forms and more complex projects. Slab Building – By rolling clay into flat slabs, you’ll work to create a “box” shape… the square shape can only be achieved by hand built techniques; not on the pottery wheel. You’ll learn to score and slip the places where you join your slabs, and then add coils to insure the strongest bond and best practices of construction. Clay slabs can also be draped or slumped over various shaped surfaces to create masks, bowls and platters.

Coiling – was used long before the invention of the potter’s wheel. By using coils built one onto the next, pots were turned by hand on a wooden or stone turnstile and paddled with a flat object to blend them and achieve a smooth finished surface. We’ll also work to create the many decorative styles that can be achieved with coils. After the basics are mastered, you’ll learn to combine these techniques increasing in complexity, and allowing greater diversity in the projects you’re able to create
