FEATURED ARTISTS FROM THE EXHIBIT TO LEAD APPLIED WORKSHOPS:
Justin Zielke is an American sculptor living in Pratt, Kansas. He is both classically and digitally trained with a BFA in Illustration from the University of Kansas and an MFA in Animation from the Savannah College of Art and Design. During his master’s degree, he developed an understanding of human movement and film semiotics in experimental animation. He now focuses this knowledge on how a sculpture affects a viewer’s experience while walking through an environment. The traditional materials he works with consist of bronze, wood, clay, resin, and found-object. Zielke also employs 3D techniques such as photogrammetry and digital sculpting.
My sculptures explore expressive movement and how the natural state of a medium influences the depiction of a figure. I focus on what makes a medium unique and how I can engage a viewer to believe a figure is emerging naturally from the material. By sacrificing a traditional sculpture’s physical accuracy in favor of the medium’s innate beauty, the work begins to demand a subjective relationship with the viewer.
Tim Joseph is a sculptor from Denver, CO. After completing his MFA he moved to Fort Collins, CO where he opened his own studio and bronze foundry. His business, Sculpture Center, serves as a sculpture production center. They have been in existence since 1980 and have partnered with thousands of artists in the development of their projects; including but not limited to, restoration projects of the Paul Manship collection, for the Metropolitan Museum in New York City and the Cathedral Church of Saint John of the Devine, also in New York City. Tim’s inspiration came from his father, a college professor and artist, William Joseph. Together, William, Tim, and Tim’s brother Pat, have worked hard to develop many municipal and private sculpture projects throughout the decades across the globe. Over the recent years, the Sculpture Center has continued to develop through the efforts of Tim and his son, Qwist Joseph. Art lives on through the generations.
This image illustrates Qwist Joseph applying silicon rubber to model Phil Sabet; a similar process will be used for the Filley arm/hand molding workshops presented by TIm Joseph and Justin Zielke.
Commissioned by New Belgium Brewing Company in Fort Collins, CO, this 8′ bronze Ram Rider was installed in 2017. Qwist and Tim Joseph designed, cast and fabricated this monument from bronze and stainless steel. The sculpture depicts CSU football coach Sonny Lubick in a ram mask costume, riding a classic Penny Farthing bicycle and participating in the annual Tour de Fat bike parade. It is located at the New Belgium Porch at Sonny Lubick Field at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO.
