January 29, 2016: Kansas Day Activities
88 First graders visited the art museum to celebrate Kansas Day with us! Students learned from docent Beth Novotny about our State flower, State bird, the color wheel, and even had a chance to discuss different countries, elections, and stand by a candidate they would vote for! After the tour they drew their own sunflowers in an an art lesson taught by Mary Harden. Thank you to docent Beth Novotny and Mary Harden for leading both activities, and thanks to volunteer Tammy Poland for jumping right in to help! Supplies for these activities were provided in part by a grant from the South Central Community Foundationwe thank them greatly for their support! It was all hands on deck that morning, and completely made our day to have students get excited over art! Thanks to our volunteer Tammy Poland for your help as well, and to our teachers and aids who’s students are truly exceptional!

“A Sense of His Soul”
Photography Exhibit by Dennis Hodges
South Gallery: January 14th through March 18, 2016:

Here are some photos from our docent training session with artist Dennis Hodges. A big thank you to Dennis for donating his time. Thank you to our fabulous docents for their time and expertise as  well: Amy Clarkson, Beth Novotny, Jan Luttrell, Debbie Withers, Linda Clarkson and Judy Lee!
Save the date: There will be an artist talk the evening of February 20th (6pm).
The exhibit features 34 images from the artist’s “politician’s eyes series” Dennis has also incorporated a video into the exhibit  which is displayed in a vintage voting booth!
This series of eyes photographed during recent elections in Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Croatia, Romania and Guatemala, attempts to give us a glimpse into the mind of the politicians that run today’s countries by focusing only on their eyes in the portraits from their political posters. Look, then, into the eyes of these politicians and gain a sense of their souls. Vote for me.
